| Most Marines were in for some serious culture shock the first time they went into a village. Living conditions in the typical Vietnamese rural village were pretty primitive with no toilets and showers. But the Marines in this area were winning the hearts and minds of the peasants family in some of the villages and most of the villagers hamlet was always open to the Marine in this area . From 1968 onward, Viet Cong (VC) popularity in most rural areas continued to decline. Communists used threats,force,raping village women, stealing food,killing villagers and destroying hamlets. Because the villagers had become less cooperative to the VC. Remote areas control by the VC, they remained a constant threat to the villagers. The population that lived within, these VC zones of control were left with no choice but to support the VC unit that controlled it or else get, torture,abduct or kill by the VC. Not only was the Vietnamese civilian population left with no choice but to replenish NVA and VC units supplies, they were also forced to replenish its manpower and develop the zone for the VC. |

| The Vietnamese are some of the finest people you will meet and having been to their villages as a marine in 1968. I knew the VC had little hope of gaining the sympathies of the Vietnam villagers, but the VC frequently murder the unarmed civilian,burn the hamlets and torture and rape the Vietnamese women. VC routinely launched mortar attacks into these areas,mined the roads where these civilians use to get their crops to markets on bicycle and women and children carrying large bags of rice and other goods on these roads and the VC committed other terrorist acts that served no military purpose on these unarmed Vietnamese. Many Vietnamese didn't have the means of subsistence and had to starve and suffer under the terrorist acts of the the Communists and VC. They wanted to discourage other Vietnamese rural villages and American and ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam) sympathizers and villagers to follow the Communists and VC and this was happened all over Vietnam. |
